The Old Crown public house on Highgate Hill 1892
The Highgate Hill Cable Tramway was the first cable tramway in Europe. Opened in 1884, it was built both to demonstrate the technology and because Highgate Hilll was too steep for horse trams. The same cable system is famously still in use in San Francisco's trams. The line, which linked the Archway Tavern with Highgate Village, was abandoned in 1909 in favour of standard electric tram technology.
Soon after this photo was taken the Old Crown was rebuilt further up the hill at its present position on the corner with Hornsey Lane
