Jigsaw Puzzles From
The original Highgate Station, looking south, in 1890s
Highgate's original overground station was constructed by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway. Immediately before it opened in 1867 the line was purchased by the Great Northern Railway (GNR), It was built in a deep cutting with twin tunnels to the north and south of the new station. When first built, the station had two side platforms, with three tracks between them, and a station building on the south side. A footbridge linked the two platforms. In the distance, almost on top of the tunnels, Coleridge Buildings can be seen. These were a block of model workers flats on the south corner of Shepherds Hill and Archway Road which were destroyed by a flying bomb in 1944
