Highgate village originally had two ponds which gave the square its name. Soon after this drawing was created the northern pond (on the right) was filled in and the other pond was reduced in size. The road between the ponds was superseded by the present South Grove. The houses in the drawing still stand today, with Rock House on the left. Henry Scrimgeour depicts an idyllic scene but, in reality, the ponds were a problem. They frequently dried up in summer and were unsanitary
